- Archaeological Sites
If you love archaeology, but even for those who want to discover "the other side" of the Park, you should dedicate one or more days to the archaeological heritage making this Park a place of extraordinary beauty and historical value. Numerous testimonies and important archaeological finds are reported throughout the territory of the Park: the archaeological site of the Roman colony Alba Fucens, the Castle of Rovere in Rocca di Mezzo, the italic temple of Castel di Ieri, the archaeological site of Molina Aterno, the ancient Superequum in Castelvecchio Subequo. It's recommend to visit these places accompanied by qualified tourist guides. For information and guided tours please contact Information points of the Park.
- Convents and Churches
A visit to the Park should also include a visit to its religious treasures. Besides the wonderful buildings and monasteries, you should visit - preferably on foot - the country churches and oratories that you'll meet along lonesome and silent roads, along the ways of transhumance or in the mountains. The landscape in which they are placed and their stylistic simplicity, evoke a deep sense of peace and serenity. Not to be missed: the Church of St. Maria in Valle Porclaneta in Magliano dei Marsi, the Church of SS. Trinità in Tione degli Abruzzi, the Collegiata of St. Maria del Ponte in Tione, the Abbey of St. Lucia in Rocca di Cambio, the convent St. Giorgio in the hamlet of Goriano Valli and the convent of St. Angelo in Ocre. For information and tours, considering that not all the churches are opened, contact the Information Points of the Park.
- The Rural Churches
Along the streets of transhumance or in high ground, in the Subequana and in Aterno Valleys, you can meet rural churches and oratories of unexpected beauty. We recommend a visit to the rural church of St. Anna, in pagliare of Fontecchio, the rural Church of St. Anna, in pagliare of Tione, the Church of St. Agata in Castelvecchio Subequo, the Church and the hermitage of St. Maria of Pietrabona in Castel di Ieri, the rural Church of St. Petronilla and the Church of St. Maria Addolorata in Acciano, the Church of St. Pio in Molina Aterno.
- The "Pagliare"
A precious evidence of the local past rural and animal rearing traditions, the "Pagliare" are charming mountain villages deserving a visit. Situated between the mountain chain of the Sirente and the deep Aterno Middle Valley, at an altitude of 1000-1100 m above sea level, in correspondence with the villages of Fagnano, Fontecchio and Tione degli Abruzzi, these simple villages were the place of seasonal migration typical of vertical transhumance. In these rural settlements of altitude, without external fortification, from spring to autumn, breeders and farmers of the countries downstream (600 m above sea level), went to transmigrate, finding in cultivable lands and high pastures a primary source of livelihood. The Pagliare appear as typical houses in limestone, probably derived from the process of stoning land in order to make farmland. All the houses were equipped with underground cisterns to collect rainwater, which had to supply the water shortage of the place. The Pagliare villages can be reached by mule tracks which climb over rocky ridges along serpentine bends, or through the district of Terranera of Rocca di Mezzo. A fascinating natural path, punctuated by forests of oak, beech and black hornbeam mixed with other shrub essences like laburnum, and animated by the sudden noise of wild animals or reminders of some predator.
